Will Foursquare Fix Apple’s iOS 6 Maps Problem? Talks Reported

By now it seems doubtful that any one thing is going to fix the conundrum Apple has created with Maps in iOS 6. The bugs that plague the system are related to the visuals AND the data, and who knows what else… But Apple isn’t giving up, and their latest efforts to better iOS 6 Maps appear to be focused on the local data owned by Foursquare.

If it feels like you haven’t heard many rumblings from Foursquare lately, it’s probably because things have been pretty quiet. Recent reports show that there are only 8 million active users remaining, and Foursquare is only expected to generate revenue of $2 million in 2012. Perhaps it’s this less-than-idea position that makes Foursquare a good candidate for partnering with Apple to improve Maps. Reports from The Wall Street Journal state that Eddy Cue has been in talks with Foursquare leadership, with a possible aim at using their local data to, you know, make iOS 6 Maps work better… On top of improved local search listings, a partnership with Foursquare might also lend the sort of social boost Apple has been seeking.

With the Google Maps app now in full swing in the App Store, it feels like Apple’s Maps battle is going to be all uphill.  At least one analyst considers it possible that they’ll do something like buy TomTom, if that’s what it takes to make fast, effective changes to their mapping service. Hard to say if something that drastic will be necessary, but with Scot Forstall “out of the way,” at least now we get the indication that Apple is working hard and fast to rectify this ordeal.
